Unleashing the Magick of Maroon: Meaning, Energy, and Ritual Uses

Maroon is a deep red color that is often confused as a shade of brown due to how dark it is. It is a warm color compared to its fiery base. Maroon is best paired with other dark colors that are not too bright—otherwise, they will clash. Maroon is typically popular among Witches since its deep red color fits the calmer mood many Witches have while boosting determination without being too flashy. We know that color magick is mainly used with primary colors, with the various shades being a second thought, but the different shades of colors still have specific magickal properties. Maroon is not just another shade of red. It has the fundamental properties that the primary color red has, with other influences of the colors used to make its shade. To get an idea of what maroon can offer you, continue reading and learn about the magickal properties this fun shade of red can offer.

Maroon’s Short History

Maroon has been around since the 16th century, but it only became an official color in 1789. The name has French roots as French chestnuts (marron) are a dark red color, which, in turn, is associated with deciduous trees and shrubs.

Mabon is the eighth Wiccan sabbat that is celebrated on the autumnal equinox. During this time, the leaves start changing color and turning into reds, oranges, and yellows before falling off the trees. Reds are the most common color you will see during autumn, so it is not unheard of for Witches to display different shades of red during this time. Maroon is an especially ideal color to choose because its deep red symbolizes passion and determination. The leaves have stayed strong during the year, but now it is time for them to fall and become helpful in a different sense, showing us that it is okay to go through change as it often leads to a newer and better outcome.

Maroon’s Color Meanings

Maroon has various simple meanings and uses for Witches to learn and implement. Here are a few examples of what the color maroon means and how you can use it beneficially.

Intense Passion

Maroon is not a half-hearted color—it does everything with great joy and enthusiasm. Its zesty hue will add a pep to your step as, at its core, it is an incredibly passionate color. If you need an energy boost or to focus your passion, dress in maroon-colored clothes. Not only will the color give you a passion boost, but it can also influence those around you. They will see you and your determination, inspiring them to act the same. So, in a way, you can influence the people you work with just by wearing maroon.

Confidence

If you have self-doubt, then quickly dress in maroon. Maroon gets rid of all self-doubt and helps you remember your worth. Do not let anyone say you are cocky, as maroon is not meant to make you self-absorbed or boast about yourself excessively. Instead, maroon will make you push back any doubt and remember what you stand for and are trying to achieve. Maroon will also help you find inspiration if you are stuck in a rut or cannot think of how to continue a project.

Adrenaline Boost

We all suffer from dips of energy, and sometimes you may feel like the energy will not come back no matter what you do. Try wearing maroon if you feel lost in this dip. Maroon is such an intense, bold color that simply wearing it may be enough to lift your spirits with minimal effort. It also has a unique ability to bring life back into us, sort of acting as fresh blood pumped into our bodies and rejuvenating us.

Boosting Acceptance

Red is generally used when it comes to love and other emotions with people. Since maroon is not as bright as the typical red, people tend to feel safe and at ease with the color—it shows that everyone deserves love and compassion. Maroon does best in benefiting others more than the person wearing the color. So, in this case, maroon would be best worn when you want to remind others that they are loved and that you are a safe person to talk to should they need it.

Ambition

Maroon both dreams and does. It has an unending ambition to get things done as soon as possible. If it wants something, it will continue to strive for it. But maroon also helps us understand that failure will happen. Failure is not something to fear, but it should be a stepping stone in seeing what went wrong and what you can do next time to avoid this outcome. Wear maroon when you have a task you need to build up and present for approval from others—it will help you stay focused and create something unique that no one will be able to say no to.

If you want to use color magick—which can be hard to avoid since colors are prominent in Witchcraft—you need to consider that there are more shades of color than what you are used to seeing. If it helps, you can make a notebook or guide of the different shades you are interested in and the magickal properties that these colors have.

It is impossible to learn what every shade of color means, but you can narrow the paint palette down to the few you are most interested in and expand as you can. Now that you know of maroon's magickal properties, you should be more comfortable using the shade in place of its parent red color. You can also start to explore shades similar to maroon as its properties will be almost identical with just their unique magick to remember. This knowledge will open the floodgates for more for you to learn, remember, and explore.

Maroon Mabon Spell

What you'll need:

  • maroon paint
  • thick and thin paintbrushes
  • freshly fallen autumn leaves
  • your magick wand
  • fallen branches
  • a hand-held percussion instrument

What You Will Need to Do:

This spell is best performed outside at sunset or when the sun is at its highest peak in the sky. Pick a spot in direct sunlight. Wear light clothes that show skin, like shorts and a tank top, as you’ll be coloring on your skin with the paint.

Cast a magick circle and stand in the middle. Hold your hands up to the sky and feel the sun's warmth radiating down onto you.

Using the maroon paint, paint the leaves. It does not matter what design you use—let your hands move as they want and have fun drawing things on a whim. The paint will act as a connection to the Mabon magick, which in turn will make it easier for you to harness the power by the end of the spell.

Wave your magick wand over the colored objects. This will help build a connection between you and the elements that you have painted. As you wave your magick wand, say the following to start building a connection:

“Elements of nature,

I have colored you with the deep red of grandeur.

Maroon is the color of Mabon,

So I ask that you grant me the magick of autumn,

So that I may use it as I need

Until Mabon passes by with no greed.

May my paint and patterns grant me the magick I so need

To act with great speed

Before the sabbat doth pass.”

Set the magick wand down and hold your hands over the painted objects. You should start to feel the energy of Mabon beginning to come to you and the objects.

Take the rest of the maroon paint and draw stripes and designs on your exposed skin, including your face. Draw any design that you wish and gather the painted elements of nature. Walk clockwise in your magick circle, humming a bouncy tune and tossing the elements as you walk. Say the following:

“Elements of nature painted with the color maroon

I say unto you to piece the power of Mabon like a harpoon.

Harness the energy and bring it back to me

So that I’ll have the energy for a spree

Set in motion my magickal adventure

I will be sure

To honor the magick you gift me, dear Mabon.”

With the spell complete, bang your percussion instrument as you walk around the circle one final time. Carry the instrument with you whenever you wish to use the power of Mabon—it will call the power for you to use. Wash off the paint the following day so that you are sure the color has absorbed Mabon magick and transferred it into your body. Recharge in the same way as you may need it.
