Ostara Decorations
Ostara falls in March when Spring is starting to come. Baby animals are being born, new plants are growing, and the time of change is right around the corner. As with all the Sabbats we witches celebrate, it is essential to prepare yourself and your home for the celebrations. The easiest way to prepare yourself for the season is to decorate your home with festive symbols and charms. Now, some witches may already have their set decorations to use during Ostara, but it does not hurt to look into more decorations you can add. The more you can decorate your home, the better Ostara’s energies will be present around you. There are some advanced Ostara decorations you could make, but we will be looking at the easier to make decorations. These decorations may be more natural to make, but they will not fall short in gathering energy for you during Ostara. You can make all of these decorations on your own or with your family without weakening the magickal properties.
Create Dyed Ostara Eggs
Eggs are one of the most significant symbols of birth and reproduction. They are small, delicate objects that can contain and sprout life. Because of their life-giving abilities and abundance, it should not be a surprise that you can use eggs to represent the life-giving nature of Ostara. Now, while you can set a basket of fresh eggs out in your home to represent Ostara, to truly get the full effect of what these eggs can offer, you need to color them. By painting the eggs, you are also bringing in the magickal properties, the colors of Ostara can bring; essentially, you are getting two magickal abilities out of one object. You can go out and buy coloring kits specifically for eggs, but it is best to do everything on your own to build the best connection to your project as possible. Color the eggs using natural dyes like berry juice, beet juice, spices, and coffee grounds. Just be sure that, before you color your eggs, that the eggs have been hard-boiled. You should only be decorating the shell of the egg so that, once the eggs have served their purpose, you can peel off the shell and eat the eggs without wasting anything!
Make a Door Wreath
Wreaths are not limited to winter-themed holidays or Sabbats; you can make wreaths to celebrate any holiday. When making a wreath for a non-winter holiday, you need to be sure that you are decorating the wreath with objects of the season to gather the correct energy. During Ostara, you can make a wide variety of wreaths focusing on different themes offered by Ostara. You can make ones to welcome spring, boost fertility, bring wealth, and help you concentrate better. Ideally, you want to make the wreaths out of objects abundant, themed, or grown during Ostara to make the wreath strongly connected to the Sabbat. These wreaths are meant to be placed outside on your front door so that, for whoever passes through your doorway, they will be gifted some of the themed magick the wreath has collected during Ostara. You want to keep the wreath on your door for all of Ostara to get the most magick out of the season. When Ostara passes, you can keep the wreath up for three more days to finish absorbing the magick it has gathered before taking it down and storing it away for next Ostara.
Make an Ostara Tree
An Ostara tree is an easy way to bring in the charm and magick of new beginnings into your home. Ostara trees are typically placed inside of a vase that you can paint with images of spring, like flowers, bugs, and bright Ostara colors. The Ostara tree does not need to be big or elaborate; you can make it simple and still bring Ostara into your home. The branches of the Ostara tree should be made of fallen tree branches you have gathered in your yard or at a park. From the branches, you can tie brightly colored ribbons and hang dried flowers, painted eggs, seeds, and any other symbols of spring. When you have your Ostara Tree decorated to your desire, place it as the centerpiece on your dining table. By being used as a centerpiece,
whenever you eat, you can see and get a feel of the abundance and positive energy that comes with Spring; the image of the Ostara tree may also serve as an inspiration to you on what you can accomplish during this time of growth and inspiration.
Make a Spring Themed Altar
As with any Sabbat, you want to decorate your altar with objects of the season. For Ostara, the most accessible decorations you can use can be gathered right outside your home. Go out and find flowers that have started to bloom that you can pick and place on your altar. Gather fallen seeds and scatter them across your altar. You can add symbols of the animals of spring, like a rabbit’s foot, bird feathers, and eggs on your altar to build a connection between you and nature. You want to be sure also to add the colors of spring, like pinks, greens, yellows, and blues since the bright colors will bring positive energy and may even motivate you to be active and accomplish goals. As a final touch for your Ostara altar, place a wooden bowl in the center and fill the bowl with pieces of paper containing your aspirations, goals, and desires for the year so Ostara’s magick can start helping you gather the drive and inspiration to start reaching them.
Plant Windowsill Seeds
During Ostara, new life is starting to sprout. In some places, it may be too cold to create a proper garden outside. Or, say, you live in a home that does not have enough outdoor space for you to create the garden of your dreams. But, if your outside climate or outdoor space is not ideal for new plant life, it does not mean that you cannot grow plants during Ostara. You can still grow plants by using a windowsill planter. You do not need an expensive windowsill planter, a plastic bin that fits balanced on your windowsill should suffice. Start by picking a windowsill that is in direct view of the sun for the majority of the day. For the plants you want to grow, try picking flowers that will do well in an indoor environment, or easy to grow herbs. When you have your seeds picked out, fill the planter with soil and press the seeds into the soil with enough growing space between each one. From there, water the seeds regularly and watch them grow. Most likely, the seeds will not have fully grown during Ostara, but if they start to grow, you can be sure that the seeds will carry a bit of Ostara’s energy with them as they bloom, which they will share with you so long as they stay alive.
String up Images of Spring
When it comes to decorating your home for Spring, you need to be sure that you include symbols of Spring that are more than just flowers and seeds; some of the better images of Spring you can use are images of animals. You want to focus on animals best known for their ability to reproduce, like rabbits and chickens, deer, and so on. You do not need to use the actual animals in your decorations as pictures, toys, and food-related to their diets can be used to represent them. If you do want to use images from the animal themselves, like fur, antlers, or feathers, make sure that the animal images were humanely obtained because you will not get any positive energies from Ostara if you harm its animals. Create a long string of these images big enough to hang around your home in one big piece rather than small shorted pieces to get a better collection and flow of Ostara’s magick.
All these Ostara decorations seem fun to make, don’t they? Well, that’s the whole point! Ostara is all about new beginnings, enjoying life, and being ready to take on any challenges the world may throw at you, positive or negative. These Ostara decorations should bring a wave of newfound energy and confidence to you no other spell can mimic. To get the most out of your Ostara decorations, make them a few days before Ostara officially starts. Then, on the first day of Ostara, set out the decorations in your home and keep them up until Ostara passes. Each day that these decorations stay up should grant you more and more of Ostara’s magick, thus helping you in the long run for the year. You do not have to make all of the Ostara decorations we have listed; choose the ones that call out to you the most and that you have easy access to create. May Ostara bless you and help you find a positive year!
