Frog & Toad
Frogs and toads are often seen as gross, slimy creatures that hop around eating bugs all day. These are just exaggerated features that people afraid of frogs and toads have boasted about. Frogs and toads may look odd, but they have magickal properties that should be respected. Animals have long been used for their magickal properties, and frogs and toads are no exception. They have a special place in folklore and magickal and medicinal uses. Learning to use frog and toad magick will not be difficult once you learn all about what makes them tick. If you have never heard of utilizing frogs and toads for their magick, look no further, as you will learn how to and gain some crafty skills for future spells and rituals.
Differences Between Frogs and Toads
There are three main differences to look at when trying to figure out whether you have a frog or toad in front of you.
Skin
The most significant indicator between a frog and a toad is their skin: frog skin is sleek and smooth while toad skin is bumpy. Toads also tend to have dry skin, while frogs always look wet, even if not in the water.
Legs and Body
Frogs have much longer legs, longer than their bodies since they travel by hopping. Their bodies are lithe and athletic-looking, and their noses are pointier to cut through the air for faster hopping. On the other hand, toads have much shorter legs as they tend to crawl rather than hop, and toads are squat and dumpy and have broader noses.
Spawn
Spawn is the fertilized eggs that frogs and toads lay and turn into tadpoles. Frogspawn is laid in gooey clumps while toad spawn floats in stringy lengths.
Frogs, Toads, and Their Folklore
Since frogs and toads are found worldwide, there is no surprise that there are abundant folklores about them.
Some cultures believe that a frog entering your home brings bad luck, while others say it brings good luck, depending on your feelings towards the frog. The Māori people believe that killing a frog brings floods and heavy rains, while some African tribes say killing a frog brings drought. The moral is that it is not ideal to kill a frog.
In areas of the Appalachia, frogs croaking at exactly midnight means that there is rain on the way. However, some societies think that frogs croaking during the day will bring rain.
In the Christian Bible, a plague of frogs swarmed over the land of Egypt—this was God’s way of showing dominance over Egyptian gods and freeing the people the Egyptians enslaved. In a way, the frogs forced the Egyptians to reject their gods to stop the torrent of frogs from causing further harm.
Frogs and Toads in Medicine
Frogs and toads have medicinal properties that have been used for thousands of years. While it is recommended not to use these properties in modern medicine, it does not hurt to learn how frogs and toads were used. In medieval times, frogs were placed in the mouths of the sick, and incantations were said over them. When the frog jumped from their mouths, they took the illness with them. Pieces of frogs were used as an aphrodisiac or to boost fertility when people of ancient times were trying to grow a family. Frog liver was once used as an antidote to most poisons since different frogs produce a slime that acts as an antibiotic.
Frog and Toad Magickal Uses
Frogs are a symbol of rebirth and fertility, and they are ideal to use during rituals revolving around fertility, healing, and female energy. Since frogs move through both land and water, they can symbolize the Earth and Water element, as well as represent the world unseen.
Since frogs are symbols of fertility, they also symbolize potential. Frogs start as tiny tadpoles that change into hopping, croaking adult frogs. Tadpoles have the potential to grow, so if they are used in spells of potential, they can help you become something more than you think you can be. In this sense, frogs can also be used in spells for potential since everyone can grow and change into something that even you may not realize.
Continuing with the fertility link, frogs and toads represent prosperity. Many Asian cultures have frog and toad figurines in their homes to bring prosperity to their lives and businesses. If a frog or toad crosses your path, you can take it as a sign of good luck, and that fortune smiles upon you. You should expect positive outcomes in the near future.
Frogs and toads are a symbol of purity. Both hop around getting muddy and dirty, but once they take a dip in the water, they come out clean and pure again. So, they are ideal for spells revolving around redemption and renewal—that no matter what you’ve been through, you can get back on track and strive forward.
Frogs and toads are unique little creatures that have more to them than eating bugs and hopping about. By gaining more knowledge of their history and what magick they possess, you can learn how to incorporate them better into the spells and rituals you are trying to perform. Remember that anytime you want to use a frog or toad, though, that you keep them alive, especially if you are temporarily borrowing one from the wild. The only reason you can use a deceased version is if you purchase one who died of natural causes or if you found one already passed away in the wild. Always thank the frogs and toads whose magick you borrow so that they can replenish their magick for future Witches. And always release the frogs and toads where you caught them. If you have a pet you are using, be careful not to harm them and give them a well-deserved treat afterward. Hop along, fellow Witches!
