Crocus is a type of seasonal flower that is part of the iris family and is made up of about 100 different species. They grow low to the ground with stems that remain underground. But they are not hard to miss as they produce large flowers of varying colors, like white, yellow, purple, and orange. Once their flowering passes, they remain dormant until their next bloom. While these flowers are abundant during spring, they serve a bigger purpose than being pretty in your garden. These flowers also have magickal attributes to them that any Witch can utilize. If you want to broaden your knowledge of flowers and their magickal uses, the crocus is a must to learn and use. Let’s learn together of the magick these small, yet hardy flowers can offer.

Folklore of the Crocus
Crocus is derived from the Greek word krokos, which means yellow. The name Crocus is also linked to a Greek companion for the god Hermes. Hermes accidentally killed Crocus during a discus game when he did not angle the discus correctly in the throw and struck him in the head. While mourning, Hermes transformed Crocus’ body into a flower and buried its stem in the ground where he could always visit his friend and watch the flowers bloom in his honor. Though the story is sad, the flower is associated with happiness and cheer, as the memory of a long-loved friend will always be remembered with the flower.
Crocus Magickal Uses
Crocus is linked to the powers for new beginnings. The petals and stems can be used in rituals or prosperity pouches to give you better luck at the start of a new adventure. They are also connected to fertility, so if you are trying to have a baby, you can meditate in a field of crocus or have petals on your bed to boost your fertility. Crocus’ prosperity and fertility properties are boosted during spring, as this is when they bloom at their strongest.
If you are arguing with someone and cannot seem to find a solution, you can make a focus pouch that both you and the other person should hold when talking. The crocus will help keep you calm, keep your mind focused, and lead you toward finding a solution that both of you will be happy with. When the dispute is settled, keep the pouches with you for a couple of weeks or until the problem is sure not to raise issues again.
Crocus is highly beneficial for divination. Having crocus where you are doing readings can boost your ability to see visions; you will see things clearer and better understand what your divination is trying to tell you. You can charge your divination tools before using them by resting them in a field of crocus or by placing petals around the tools for one night. Placing crocus petals under your pillow will allow you to have a more fulfilling out-of-body experience where unknown answers will show themselves, or you may even be visited by a spirit with the solution you desire.
Placing crocus on your altar or at your front door will bring about blessings for a better time. If you are struggling with a rough patch in life, the crocus will keep dark energies away from you so that you can focus on what you need to do; crocus can even bring about positive energies to ease any pain or sorrows you may have.
Autumn crocus produces a highly sought-after herb known as saffron. It takes thousands of flowers to produce one pound of saffron, as each plant produces at least two small saffron stems. Saffron can be used for a wide variety of purposes, like being brewed in tea and burned for cleansing, enhancing psychic abilities, and boosting your strength. Be wary of how much you use, as saffron is hard to grow.
Crocus and Ostara
Crocus is one of the first flowers of spring that you will see. It initiates the start of the season. Ostara is all about new beginnings and committing to ambitions. Crocus is the best flower to plant in your garden during the start of Ostara due to its similar energies to the sabbat. The freshly bloomed petals will act as sponges to absorb the Sabbat’s energy so that the magick will remain even after the Sabbat is over.
You can create flower crowns and ambition satchels or give them in a bouquet to your loved one to promote the positive energies of Ostara and guide your magick in the best possible direction for the season. If you have a fertility or abundance ritual, toss the petals or keep them in your pockets to boost the magickal energy. It is also a good idea to dry the petals of crocus that bloomed during Ostara so you can have the magick of the Sabbat all year long when you need it.
Crocus are beautiful flowers, and while they seem small, they are mighty. Depending on the crocus you plant, you can have one ready at the start of each season so you can have it on hand whenever you may need its magickal aid. For the ones that are no longer flowering and stay dormant, you still need to care for them so the roots stay healthy and new flowers can bloom from the stem during the next season. Be sure to always thank the flower for being able to use it before plucking it from the ground and, if possible, plant a new crocus seed in its place so it can bloom again. Happy casting!
