Sometimes finding the perfect spell for your needs can be really difficult, so you start reading through web pages, surfing through blogs, and flipping through books. You can find lots of spells, but none seem to fit your particular situation or its unique dynamics. When you finally find the right spell, sometimes the directions don’t seem to make sense, or it is filled with nearly impossible to find ingredients. It can be so frustrating that you almost want a spell to find the right spell!
Successful spell casting is an important aspect when it comes to deepening your practice of the Craft. While it is perfectly fine to use someone else’s spells, writing your own spells empowers your practice and strengthens your intent, often leading to a more successful outcome. When you have a complete understanding of exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it, the spell has a greater likelihood of coming to fruition.
Writing your own spells also requires that you research your materials and ingredients to make sure they fit your intent and work in conjunction with one another. It would be terrible to choose two materials that directly oppose one another!
There is a lot more to spell casting than just going through the motions or saying what is written on paper. Words are powerful. They have an energy all their own. They put exactly what you want into the universe, so it is critical to think them through before using them. After all, you don’t want to cause any harm to yourself or another. Certain words carry a lot of emotional weight, which can be very helpful when writing a spell. These words are different for each person and unique to their own life experiences, so using them when writing your own spells can make your spell even more powerful.
Writing your own successful spells isn’t as hard as it may seem. Once you get the structure down, you can be as creative as you want. Here are the basics that will make sure your spell is successful:
Determine the purpose or intent of the spell
This is by far the most important part of a successful spell. You must determine your specific aim for the magickal work you are about to embark upon. The intention sets the entire tone of the spell. It is always best to word your intention in a positive way that outlines precisely what result you want. Remember, the universe can be tricky, so it is best to be very clear and concise when asking it for something.
Material components
Determine what types of materials you want to use in your spell. You can use anything from candles, rocks, colors, stones, divination tools, and herbs. The sky is the limit on materials! You can use pictures, clay figurines, leaves, flowers, or anything else you can think of. Keep in mind that what you choose should align with your intention, with the deity you choose to invoke, or both!
Decide on timing
Timing isn’t the most crucial of components, but it can make a difference in the spell’s success. Be sure to check the moon phase, day of the week, or any strange celestial happenings before embarking on a spell. Again, the universe’s energies work in wondrous ways, so it is always better to be overprepared than under.
Craft the wording
The wording of the spell is by far the most critical aspect of whether it will be successful. Words are powerful, and they must be selected very carefully! Begin by deciding what type of wording you would like to use in your spell. This could be a chant, invocation, poem, story, or even silence.
Your wording can be as simple as restating your intention in a chant or as complex as an ode to a spirit, deity, or ancestor. It could be a meditative spell to be performed solitary or a single part in an elaborate ritual. Both are needed at different times and for different reasons in our lives. There is no set word count or page limit on writing a spell. Write from your heart, then edit, clarify, and repeat the process if necessary until you feel it is a perfect representation of your energy.
It is best to be specific in what you desire as an outcome from the spell by being precise yet open. This means that you should keep the door open for other possibilities of success because the universe just might give you something better than what you originally expected.
Stay away from words like don’t, won’t, can’t, or not. And whatever you do, don’t set a time frame for your spell. The universe likes to do things in its own time, not yours. Write your spell in the first person using I, me, or another person’s full name. And let’s be real, ask for something reasonable in your spell. There are just certain things that could never happen—like growing wings—so concentrate your energy on those that could.
A lot of people love to use spells that rhyme. While it can make it easier to remember (and chant), it is not required. Creating a set of words, rhyming or not, with a song-like quality helps our minds slip into an altered state of consciousness much easier. This can help raise the energy in your spell and, thus, the effectiveness by providing a space to tap into the other side.
But if you aren’t great at rhyming or writing song-like words, never fear because historically, spells didn’t rhyme. While it can add to the spell, it won’t detract from the effectiveness if you don’t rhyme words. Plus, forcing words to rhyme can actually change the meaning of your intention, which can potentially change the whole outcome of the spell. So if it doesn’t flow in a rhyme, don’t force it.
You will never have problems finding a spell when you know how to write and successfully cast your own. Each time you practice magick, you can tailor your spells to be exactly what you want and need.
